Last week I did something that I don't usually do. I paid to go to the theaters and see an animated movie. Made by Disney. Yes. Yes. I know. What were you thinking? Mark? Why would you waste your time seeing a kid's movie? Well, I took a bunch of kids. Okay. It was their Christmas present. I'm a sweet uncle. The movie we saw was called wish. Oh, You know, I'll read the description of the movie. But I'll read in a Disney voice. Young Asher. Makes a wish. So powerful that it's answered by a cosmic force. A little ball, a boundless energy. Called star. With stars help. Asham a save the kingdom from her king magnifical and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars. Wonderous things can happen. That's kind of like how a Disney movie narration would go. Right. I think it did a pretty good job. wonder how to box office of 105 million. The main Lee, but sorry, not a box house of 105 million. It was a budget of 105 million. The main character that you would, or the main actor. I mean, the, you would know from this movie is Chris pine who played the villain. It's rare that he plays villains. So that was pretty cool. You had Evan Peters who played Simon. You and the other. Well known actor is Victor Garber who plays the Beano. Most of you know him from are these, I know him from a legends of tomorrow. You have Harley Goulian who played Gobbo that guy is for me. was well-known from what we do in the shadows. And then you have Allen today. Complete Valentino out. You will know him from Dodge ball. He's the guy who thinks he's a pirate. This movie was about what I expected it was made for kids. They all had a great time. This is a little bit of a detour, but let's go there. Every time. I take these kids out or I hang out with these kids. I feel like I end up getting sick. Does anyone else feel that way? Teachers that listen to the pod, how often do kids get each other sick? I feel like it happens all the time. That's the explanation I'm getting. If my voice sounds a little off. It was worth it though. I love hanging out with them. They're hilarious. Whether they mean to be or not. Like one kid, just like he's watching the movie. And he has the bag of popcorn. And then he tells the popcorn Ford and it spills all over the seat. He jumps up and he looks like he's about to get the popcorn and start eating it off a seat. This is why they all get sick. Cause they do crazy shit like this. And I'm like, no, I just shoved the popcorn on the floor. Like he's got still enough in the bag. Don't eat popcorn of the seat. That's gross. Another cat halfway through the movie walks up to me is another one. Uh, there, my nieces and nephews. If I didn't already mention that he walks up to me and he's like Zeo. So what, and I'm like, are you talking about what's happening in the movie while the movie's happening in the theater? Go sit down. It's like, oh, sorry. Oh, sorry. It was so funny. The movie itself was fun. I could do without the musicals. I'm just not a musical guy. I'm not saying that makes the movie bad, but every time. If I enjoyed it. It's rare. I enjoy a movie with musical numbers. I would say frozen was one of those movies. Uh, what's another one I really loved. Uh, what's the one with Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron's. And Deya. We could rewrite the stars, you know, that film. Oh, what's it called? It's going to drive me crazy. Uh, what's it called? greatest showman. That's it. That's the name of that film? Greatest. Showman's another one that I really liked this movie though. The last song felt like it was pretty good, but they cut it out for the sake of the cinematic scene. So it was like musical cinematic scene musical. Which kinda made me like fall out of that song. Cause I didn't really hear what it would have sounded like. Here's the thing. I've never covered a kid's movie before I talked about across the spider verse, but I really felt like adult animation, if anything, it was so well done. This felt like it was made for children. No. There's some times animated movies like across the spiders or, yeah, it's geared to kids, but also adults, this felt like it was more focused on kids. Which is fine. Frozen felt that way too, but I guess that whole world of frozen. Was more of a. Was more well established in that movie. It was better presented to you as an audience. Which is why it appealed to adults and kids. This film feels like it's more geared towards children. I don't know. Oh, sorry. The I said earlier, the box office, the budget was 1 0 5. No, it actually was the box office. So to reiterate the budget of this film was almost$200 million and the box office was 105. We just talked about on a previous episode about how the budgets for films needed to go down because the box office just isn't there. Here's a good example. You have a movie that's more focused for children. How big can that audience really be? If you want to have a big. Budget animation will be. It's got to appeal to adults and kids. Which leads me to believe that this film over the course of its run in the theaters, won't do too well. Now, this is the kind of film where they should have. Either lowered the budget or put it straight to Disney. Plus this is the kind of film where you shouldn't have. Chris pine is a lead. How much money did he cost? He's an excellent action. I'm a huge fan, but why would you spend all that money to have him in a lead? Just have like no name, people are low or actual voice actors perf that's what they should do actually. If they're going to lower the budgets of these animated films, hire actual voice actors, not actors to do the voices. That's when the film. Can really lower its budget. I guess maybe they wanted to have him. Kind of be part of the marketing for the film. I just don't really see where that works. I'm not saying we're cut 50 million. I'm sitting at paid 50 million. But that's an avenue to cut. I also feel like they should take more time to put out the animation. So the studios don't get overwhelmed. The studios that are doing the animation and therefore the budgets can come down for that as well. Hey, listen. Disney's going to learn the hard way this movie is not doing too well. I don't even think inside out. Did too well. Not inside out what's elemental. That's the one that just came out. Apparently elemental is really well done. But it didn't do well in the box office. I'm pulling that up now. And I've been talking a lot about the box office is just interesting to me, cause I want, I don't know how. I don't know how these films. Performing poorly will affect the future of cinema. It's just super interesting. Okay. All right. Elemental did good elemental got. they also had a$200 million budget, but they made almost. 500 million at the box office. That's way better. Let's look at their cast for elemental and no big name actors in the leads. Oh, yeah, Catherine and a Hara, but not on the level of Chris pine, even Catherine, Catherine O'Hara isn't as well known as Chris pine. Maybe that's oh, Josh gods there. I can't believe I haven't seen elemental. I really want to see that's the thing with these films. I would watch animated films. In the comfort of my home, but I'm not really the kind of guy that would go to theaters to see an animated film, unless it's like an across the spider verse level or Mariel bros, or even Pokemon. Like those are the kinds of things I'm interested in. Not another Disney princess film that that's not for me. But Hey, listen. If you want to go take your kids and have a good theater experience. Go ahead. I just think most of you. Adults. If you're seeing it without kids would be better suited to watch it from home. And if you're not a fan of musicals, this film just isn't for you. There's a lot in there. There were elements. No pun intended. Of this film that I, you know, I truly enjoyed. I thought the core message of the film. Was. Well done. It's about your dreams and the kind of magic that having hope and believing your genes can give you. Which, you know, Now, now that I'm thinking of it. I thought that that did resonate with me a little bit. It was pretty well done. I thought there was some really cool animation and typical Disney fashion. That's a well, always well done. Without spoiling anything. There were some really cool nods to pass Disney characters that I just thought was dope. Dopey. There's a little pun. A little hint about what's to come. If you haven't seen it. I won't say anything else. That last song did they play at the end? It's almost like their version of let it go. Let it go. Let it go. I thought that song had real potential. I haven't heard the whole thing. But I definitely got to go listen to it. The only thing I have to say, though. I don't think it's possible. For it to be as good as the savvy geeks theme song. See in next week.
